België Heeft een nieuwe Wereldkampioen! Martijn Eerdekens schrijft geschiedenis in het Junioren Zweefvliegen.

Brussel, 27 juli 2024 – België viert vandaag een historische prestatie in de wereld van het zweefvliegen. Martijn Eerdekens, een 22-jarige piloot uit Pelt, heeft zichzelf en het land op de kaart gezet door de allereerste Belgische junior wereldkampioen zweefvliegen ooit te worden. Tijdens de Junior World Gliding Championship 2024, gehouden in Ostrów, Polen, van 13 tot 27 juli, wist Martijn de titel te veroveren.Dit wereldkampioenschap, georganiseerd door de Fédération Aéronautique Internationale (FAI), bracht de beste jonge zweefvliegers van over de hele wereld samen. Martijn, samen met zijn teamgenoot Robbe Van Brandt (21) uit Nijlen, vertegenwoordigde België met trots. Naast de historische overwinning van Martijn, heeft ook Robbe Van Brandt een mooie prestatie geleverd door een eervolle 27ste plaats te behalen in een zeer competitief deelnemersveld. Zijn inzet en doorzettingsvermogen gedurende de competitie verdienen eveneens lof en dragen bij aan het succes van het Belgische team.De wedstrijd houdt in dat de piloten naar verschillende punten vliegen en dit zo snel mogelijk moeten doen. Maar een zweefvliegtuig heeft uiteraard geen motor. De piloot moet op basis van opstijgende warme lucht (thermiek) omhoog zien te geraken, maar de ene thermiekbel stijgt al iets sneller dan de ander…

Belgium Has a New World Champion! Martijn Eerdekens makes history in Junior Gliding.

Brussels, July 27, 2024 – Today, Belgium celebrates a historic achievement in the world of gliding. Martijn Eerdekens, a 22-year-old pilot from Pelt, has put himself and the country on the map by becoming the first ever Belgian junior world champion in gliding. During the Junior World Gliding Championship 2024, held in Ostrów, Poland, from July 13 to 27, Martijn managed to win the title. This world championship, organized by the Fédération Aéronautique Internationale (FAI), brought together the best young glider pilots from all over the world. Martijn, together with his teammate Robbe Van Brandt (21) from Nijlen, proudly represented Belgium. In addition to Martijn’s historic victory, Robbe Van Brandt also delivered a great performance by achieving an honorable 27th place in a very competitive field of participants. His dedication and perseverance during the competition also deserve praise and contribute to the success of the Belgian team. The competition involves the pilots flying to different points and having to do this as quickly as possible. But of course a glider has no engine. The pilot has to try to get up on the basis of rising warm air (thermics), but one thermal rises a little faster than the other…
